The above is the primary question I intend to answer through my PhD research at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia.
RESEARCH UPDATE
I am in the final stages of the arts based element of my research, where I invite a diverse audience to view the first full edit of the documentary that sees 8 participants share their experiences of cultural trauma and the ways in which they transform it.
I was fortunate enough to present some of my early research findings at the International Trauma Research Foundation in Boston, May 2024. It was invigorating to share space with academics, practitioners and mental health activists dedicated to supporting the field.
Next steps of my research is to finalise the documentary and continue with my analysis to uncover further findings using Braun and Clarke's Thematic Analysis.
I look forward to sharing my findings and proposed recommendations in the first half of 2025.

“Today, through tears, I watched this. To help me understand, to help guide me, to light the road ahead. This documentary is powerfully made, through the eyes of the trauma response from within, to help guide and heal others. Thank you. From one survivor, and caregiver to another, thank you.. what a powerful video. ♥️"

“My most significant learning from this week was the effect of fear on every individual's lives. The class's discussion with Yemi Penn about the role of fear in determining our actions, beliefs and more importantly, inactions really resonated with my own experiences. I would often feel a lack of autonomy in life, regardless of how great the consequences were of my actions. Now, after considering Yemi's thought-provoking questions “What is your biggest fear?" and "What is the worst that could happen?" especially when reflecting upon indecisive moments, I see how caged in I was by my fear."

“Thank you Yemi. I truly loved reading your amazing life story that took me on your beautiful and ‘bat-shit crazy’ journey! ;) There is an abundance of knowledge and wisdom that had me writing notes from start to end. I loved the mini, very doable, exercises at the end of each chapter that allowed me to reflect on my own life and realise how far I had come. I cannot wait to read the next one!."
Thank you! Your virtual letter is on it's way. If you don't hear back from me or my team in 48 hours please email ea@yemipenn.com
I would be lying to you if I said that I signed up to do the work on trauma or becoming a global speaker. I definitely did not think I would go back into education!
However, as Kute Blackson says 'Our Dreams Choose Us' and the minute I stopped betraying my soul and resisting.......everything seemed effortless. I hope you too may find this path of least resistance.
